Starz has found their Da Vinci. Relatively unknown British actor Tom Riley has landed the plum titular role in the pay channel’s upcoming series, Da Vinci’s Demons, after an extensive search. Riley, with no American screen credits to speak of, has appeared in a few series across the pond including Monroe & Bedlam, as well as a role in British sequel St. Trinian’s II.  He is, however, quite something to look at. I’m curious to see if the series will explore all the historical aspects of Da Vinci’s experiences, including the personal life about which many historians have extensively written and questioned.

This news can never be reblogged enough! A massive massive talent.

Tom Riley Is The New Leonardo da Vinci

twism:

Tom Riley has reportedly been selected to play Leonardo Da Vinci in the new Starz series Da Vinci’s Demons. According to Reuters, Tom will play “the artist and inventor during his turbulent youth in Florence, Italy who struggles to live within the confines of his own reality and time”. I’ve never seen this dude in anything, except for Arcadia which he looked hubbahubbadroolstare hot in, but he’s awfully cute, isn’t he? I approve of this!

Sometimes I just like to remember that this happened.

The last night seeing Arcadia. Tom Riley is determined to ruin all photos. And by “ruin” I clearly mean “make them perfect.” I’m laughing so hard in this picture that I’m almost crying.

I’m so, so, so excited for him after hearing that da Vinci news. I cannot think of anyone more fitting for the role, or more deserving of such a great chance. I still stand by opinion of him — he deserved to be nominated for his work in Arcadia and it’s a damn shame that he wasn’t. He is a phenomenal actor and an even better person and I just can’t contain my joy for him.

Tom tweeted a link to The Hollywood Reporter announcing the fantastic news that he has been cast as Leonardo Da Vinci in Starz new 8 part original drama Da Vinci’s Demons.

British actor Tom Riley has been cast to play a young Leonardo da Vinci in the network’s upcoming original series, Da Vinci’s Demons. The historical fantasy drama, a co-production with BBC Worldwide, follows what is being labeled the “untold” story of da Vinci during his turbulent youth in Renaissance Florence.
“Given that da Vinci was the model for the ‘Renaissance Man,’ these were incredibly large shoes to fill. Leonardo had to be smart, witty and incredibly confident —without coming across as arrogant. He also had to be tormented, because, as a true visionary and polymath, he was ostracized for his ideas as much as he was celebrated,” said the series’ scribe David S. Goyer. “As soon as [Tom] finished his audition, we knew we had found our man.” Added Starz managing director Carmi Zlotnik, “Tom showed us that there are many dimensions to this man yet to be explored, and, at the same time, make him believable, suprising and unique to a world-wide audience.”
